Today, I want to talk about motivation to work or produce content even when you don’t feel like it. Starting something new can be very exciting but along the journey, things usually get tough. There are times when it feels like what you are doing doesn’t matter and you struggle to find motivation to continue. I want to share some tips that have helped me stay motivated and work when I don’t feel like.
Remember your why
Your why is like your North Star. The compass you check when it seems like you are going off your path. It keeps you grounded and centered. This is why it is very essential that you do not begin something for the wrong reasons else you find yourself drifting away with no anchor. This is a principle preached by everyone, you have to know why you are doing what you’re doing. It has to matter deeply and resonate with your true identity. The truth is that sometimes your why might just be that you have to make money and that alone will get you to work.
Create in-built routines
Create in-built routines that conditions your mind to show up. For the past seventy days, I have engaged in a free writing exercise. There were days when I didn’t feel like it, but because I had built a routine that forced me to act even when I didn’t want to, I found that my emotions began to catch up with my actions.
Having a routine is a gamechanger. It’s like setting cues that trigger an action. I learnt this concept from Atomic Habits (comment if you want a book review).
View self-doubt as a rite of passage
Through my interactions with creatives and professionals, I have found that self-doubt is very common. I have a theory, if you are always comfortable when you are trying something, it means you are still in your comfort zone. It is when we begin to go into uncharted waters that the doubts begin to creep in. At this point, we have two options, forge ahead and push your abilities to its limits or retreat in fear of the unknown.
Celebrate the small wins
Success is a journey. Progress will always be diverse to different people. We know we can’t avoid the process. Most times, all we can track on the way to our goals are the little feats. The ones that seem minute but are really stepping stones.
Life moves fast, take time to look around and be thankful for how far you have come.
Sometimes all you need to do is rest; take a break, do something you love, read a book, engage in self-care and pray.
There are days when the only thing that will keep you going is the commitment that you have made to yourself. On some other days, it will be like you are in a flow state.
Let the bad days remind you to be thankful of the good days.
